Designing Hybrid Steel and Timber Systems Just Got Easier

The American Institute of Steel Construction has a new complimentary resource for architects and designers. Only four pages, our Hybrid Steel-Timber Smart Reference is quick to read, easy to download, and an efficient resource to keep on hand when you're considering or working with a hybrid system.

You can get the best of both worlds when it comes to optimizing structural performance and aesthetics—and that starts with a steel frame. The new Smart Reference outlines how you can pair a steel frame with a timber floor system to achieve longer spans, improved vibration performance, reduced column profiles, and lower embodied carbon (thanks to structural steel's infinite recyclability).

The new reference sheet includes detailed hybrid design considerations for fire protection, constructability, acoustics, and more. Plus: it provides a useful case study, a link to third-party vetted Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs), and a list of nine additional resources.

Visit aisc.org/architecture for an in-depth look at our tools and resources for architects, and for the latest on new systems and innovations, subscribe to the Architecture Center Newsletter here. It’s free!
