Our Design Education (DE) program is dedicated to significantly increasing access to design education for K-12 students in Philadelphia. It is evident that the design and construction industry lacks diversity, which is why one of our main objectives is to raise awareness among BIPOC and Latinx students about the incredible career opportunities available. Join us in this exciting journey of empowering the next generation of designers and builders!
The Design Education (DE) program brings volunteer architects, designers, and engineers to K-12 school classrooms and uses a series of hands-on STEAM projects to introduce students to the design process. Our program typically provides 5-6 classes a semester for each classroom.
A hands-on community event for families and children to increase awareness of design education while practicing creative and critical thinking skills.
DE supports educators’ curriculum development by providing resources and project-based instruction related to a specific design medium and/or process. In addition, we can develop custom lesson plans and coordinate firm visits that enhance the students' project in the classroom.
During a school-hosted career day, designers and DE staff, will share a presentation that explains their personal and professional path to their career, what they do presently, examples of their work, and possible hands-on activity.
DE provides curriculum support to educators on a local and national level. DE and designers work closely with the educator to understand their needs and then the designer provides resources such as a project outlines, samples of general outcomes, supply lists and/or a slide show help to integrate design education into your classroom.
