Archival Stories - How Contemporary Design Can Illuminate the Past

In 2009, Deb Rudman became the steward of her grandfather’s 35mm slides. “Slideshows were always a highlight over the years of visits with my Grandpa Ben & Grandma Gussie. It was over two decades since my grandfather had died, and his meticulously cataloged collection had fallen into disarray.” A situation many families face with the loss of loved ones is what to do with the family archive. Lisa Marie Patzer has been exploring ideas of the archive, specifically domestic archives, and how the use of new digital technologies can alter the way these memories are preserved and elevated through illuminated design.

Based on Lisa Marie’s interest in working with archives as an element of her artistic practice, Deb offered her a selection of Grandpa Ben’s slides to serve as the basis of a new body of work, Chromatographic Landscapes. As part of the ongoing dialogue between the two artists, Lisa Marie invited Deb to create a video piece, Sample Portrait, honoring her relationship with her mother and Grandfather.

In celebration of American Archives Month, the Termite TV Collective invited Lisa Marie and Deb to display their work at Cherry Street Pier, Studio 1, October 4 - 30. On October 10, as a partner event with DesignPhiladelphia, Lisa Marie Patzer and Deb Rudman will share about their creative work incorporating archival material in contemporary design and multimedia storytelling. The event includes conversation between the artists, moderated by Chase Dougherty of the Delaware Contemporary, screening of Sample Portrait, a 35mm slide show, and installation of large prints and illuminated art panels.
