Designing the Future: High School Students Take the Creative Lead on Their New Snack Products

The Diversity in Design x DesignPhiladelphia Workshop Series provided high school students with an unforgettable hands-on experience, immersing them in the fundamentals of design thinking and creativity. Over three sessions, students explored packaging and booth design, learning to craft innovative products and presentations. Guided by Campbell’s designers Tom Brooke, Chris Loper, Mark Rice, and Shakirah Stinson, as well as Freeman designers Talley Bryant and Candace Charpentier, students navigated the journey from ideation to end products, gaining invaluable insights into the world of design.

Participants began by tackling packaging design, creating concepts that would engage their target audience. They analyzed what separates good packaging from bad, understanding how elements like branding, functionality, and storytelling intersect. From there, they created a prototype receiving feedback to perfect their creations. Lastly, students brought their prototypes to life as they learned about the principals of an expo booth and how to design a booth that both captures attention and is functional.

"This experience reminded me of the importance of creating opportunities for the next generation to explore design in a hands-on, inclusive environment," reflected instructor Candace Charpentier. "It was a privilege to be part of a program that not only taught practical skills but also sparked excitement about the possibilities within the world of design." The series didn’t just teach design skills; it created a space for these teens to connect with professional designers and peers, expanding access to a field that thrives on fresh, diverse perspectives. “My biggest takeaway was learning to work as a team and coming out of my shell more,” said a 12th-grade student at South Philadelphia High School. With this newfound confidence, the students walked away with practical skills and the belief that their creativity can shape the future.

Special thanks to students from Arts Academy at Benjamin Rush High School, Kensington Creative and Performing Arts High School, Simon Gratz High School, South Philadelphia High School, and Thomas A. Edison High School for attending and making this series a success.
