Why was the Center for Architecture and Design renamed to DesignPhiladelphia?
The Center was rebranded DesignPhiladelphia to reflect our expanded mission of supporting all design disciplines, not just architecture, from kindergarten through career.
What does the name change mean for the organization?
The new name, DesignPhiladelphia, represents our commitment to inclusivity and collaboration across all design fields, including graphics, interiors, and more. Our programming: Design Education, the Festival, the Edmund N. Bacon Urban Design Awards, and the Louis I. Kahn Lecture will all continue underneath the new DesignPhiladelphia brand.
Will DesignPhiladelphia still focus on architecture?
Yes, architecture remains integral to us. Our programs and partnerships continue to promote architects and architecture within our broader design focus. In fact, DesignPhiladelphia will be able to connect with the public with stories about all design disciplines in a way that professional design associations sometimes cannot.
Will 1218 Arch Street still be called the Center for Architecture and Design?
No, it's now the Center for DesignPhiladelphia, a hub for design activities and home to several design associations as In Residence Partners.
What organizations will still be located at the newly named Center for DesignPhiladelphia?
The Center for DesignPhiladelphia will continue to house AIA Philadelphia and DesignPhiladelphia, with shared staff including Executive Director Rebecca Johnson and Director of Development & Strategic Partnerships Jermaine Jenkins. The Community Design Collaborative will also maintain operations here. Additionally, we're thrilled to host PhilaNOMA, Design Advocacy Group, and Creative Mornings PHL for their activities.
Is the DesignPhiladelphia festival still happening?
Absolutely, the DesignPhiladelphia festival continues to celebrate design excellence annually and provides networking opportunities for designers.
How will DesignPhiladelphia support designers throughout the year?
Being a creative is hard, we understand and stand with you throughout the year. We offer (fun!) professional development programs to fuel innovation, hone skills, and advance careers; a bigger, louder platform to showcase your latest and greatest news; and networking events to connect like-minded individuals. Through these efforts, our goal is to ensure that designers do more than just survive - they thrive.
Can non-designers participate in DesignPhiladelphia?
Yes. DesignPhiladelphia warmly invites non-designers to our events. No matter your interest - be it architecture, graphic design, or the impact of design in general - there's something for everyone at DesignPhiladelphia.
What is happening to the Architecture and Design Education program?
Our K-12 Architecture and Design Education programming will now be called Design Education programming. This program continues to grow and expand and is always looking for volunteer professionals to help us give back to our City’s youth and invest in the next generation of designers.
