On March 11, 2026, the School District of Philadelphia hosted its annual Senior Success Seminar, bringing together more than 300 high school seniors for a day centered on career preparation and possibility. Designed to empower the next generation of Philadelphia’s workforce, the seminar introduced students to design pathways and professionals within the city.
A highlight of the day was the keynote address from our very own Michael Spain, Director of Design Education. Speaking directly to the uncertainty and excitement that often defines this moment, Michael reflected on his own path from a Philadelphia student to a leader in architecture and education. He emphasized that creative careers are rarely linear, shaped instead by detours and moments of discovery. Drawing on his early exposure to design, the mentors who guided him, and the access points that shaped his journey, he spoke about how opportunity and preparation work together.
The seminar also marked the start of a new partnership between DesignPhiladelphia and Shanti Meyers, founder of The Sable Collective, while continuing its relationship with Rahmi Halaby. Shanti led a workshop on fashion design and entrepreneurship, sharing how she has built a business rooted in creativity and self-expression. Her session offered students a different entry point into design, one that connects personal identity with professional opportunity. This collaboration reflects a shared commitment to making design education more visible and accessible across disciplines.
“Design education is important to students K - 12 because it is important for students to be in practice of the process of creation. They need to go through the rewarding but unforgiving process of ideation to execution. Anything worthwhile often takes trial and error to create. In a growing world that assumes mastery should be spontaneous, design requires creativity, ingenuity, and commitment that can be repeated in all areas of their lives.”
Students will have another opportunity to hear from Shanti this May during DesignPhiladelphia’s Growth by Design series, where she will continue to explore the intersections of style, creativity, and community.
The Senior Success Seminar reflects the core of DesignPhiladelphia’s mission: to build a more inclusive and connected design community by investing in the next generation. By showing students that design is not limited to one path or background, and by creating opportunities for direct engagement with professionals, the work begins early. Programs like this strengthen the pipeline into creative industries and ensure that Philadelphia’s future is shaped by a wide range of voices and lived experiences.
