Workshops such as these can be a direct pipeline to a future career for some students.

For the first time, The Center for Architecture and Design hosted multiple workshops for middle and high school students. The workshop was designed to give the students a hands-on experience and invited them to learn about textures and different "vibes" of homes. It began with an introduction to the principles of design, including the importance of color, texture, and lighting. The students discussed how colors made them feel and how different pieces of furniture and textures can change the purpose of a room.

After the discussion on the difference between homes such as eclectic homes and modern homes, the students were split into teams and tasked with building their dream spaces with a particular vibe. In one of our workshops, students were lucky enough to have the assistance of a professional interior designer, Allison Gonzalez! As the students built their dream homes, Gonzalez asked mindful questions and assisted with the assembly to help guide students to perfect their dream homes.

The workshops gave older students the space to express creativity and use skills that are not normally put to the test in most classrooms. "Exposure to design is important to high school students because it brings to their attention career opportunities they may not have known of. It can be the first time students re-frame their manner of thought, and try to express how they visualize the world-view to others," stated Allison Gonzalez. They learned about the importance of teamwork and communication, as well as how to create a space that serves a purpose. The workshop was a wonderful opportunity for high school students to explore a potential passion for architecture and design thinking skills that they can use in a future career. Thank you to Northeast High School and Delaware Valley Friends School for joining us in our efforts to expand students' horizons in the world of architecture and design education.
