Across Philadelphia, too many young people are told that pursuing creativity isn’t “practical.” DesignPhiladelphia's Design Education is changing that.
Each year, our Designing Futures Breakfast brings together educators, designers, and advocates to celebrate creativity as a force for opportunity. Together, we’re building pathways for students to see themselves as designers of their own futures.
This year, we are proud to honor Dr. Lakita Costner, a visionary educator, artist, and leader whose work has transformed how young people across the city experience design and creativity. Through her leadership in the School District of Philadelphia, Dr. Costner has helped Career and Technical Education students see themselves not just as students, but as innovators and creators. With a Doctorate in Education Leadership from Drexel University and degrees in Applied Art, Design, and Printmaking, she blends artistic mastery with deep educational expertise across her work.
As the founder of TwelveArt, a creative collective focused on advocacy and innovation, Dr. Costner has opened doors for emerging artists and designers to grow and thrive. Her partnerships with organizations like Comcast, NFL teams, TGR Learning Labs (Tiger Woods Foundation), and DesignPhiladelphia have led to countless student opportunities and national recognition, including features on Good Morning America and other media outlets.
A tireless advocate for equity and access, Dr. Costner believes that creativity belongs to everyone. Her published research on Design Thinking and Art Cooperative Learning continues to inspire educators nationwide to reimagine what’s possible when young people are given permission to create boldly.
Join us as we celebrate Dr. Lakita Costner and the power of design to shape brighter, more inclusive futures for Philadelphia’s next generation.
When we invest in design education, we are giving our students the tools to build a strong future for themselves and our city.
