Sample projection by participating artist Oluwafemi

A collection of projected artworks in the Cuthbert Street alley.

Streets Dept Walls presents SPOTLIGHT as part of the 2022 Design Philadelphia festival. This exciting new format for temporary public art presents the work of four local artists projected into the Cuthbert St alley in Center City, Philadelphia. Every evening from 6:30pm-10:00pm from October 12-23rd during the Design Philadelphia festival, artists Aubrie Costello, Santiago Galeas, Oluwafemi and TAMEARTZ's artworks will be projected onto the ContraFuerte installation and surrounding architecture with video, painting, animations and graffiti projected into the alley. Each artist responded to the opportunity uniquely, working with LANDAU Design+Technology to formulate methods that highlight their respective practices.

Aubrié Costello shares vignettes from their ongoing inclusive multimedia series, THE EROTIC PROJECT, a collection of collaborative photography, film, music and performance art pieces they've co-created with over 40 artists chronicling unseen, intimate moments, identity expression, and pleasure practice as mutual care for our collective healing. Details of Santiago Galeas' recent collection of paintings "Semillas de Memoria" of Queer and Trans subjects of color in vibrant natural settings move about the alley, highlighting the artist's use of traditional portraiture and landscape to explore belonging and draw a relationship between queerness and nature. Oluwafemi's interdisciplinary visual and musical artistic practice and previous work in projected media served as inspiration for SPOTLIGHT.  Building on prior experiences at the Barnes Foundation and PMA, the Nigerian-born, Philadelphia-based rhythmist's new composition blends influences from hip-hop, mathematics and African culture exploring the universal phenomenon of pattern and repetition.  Drawing from Taino imagery, graffiti art, writing and culture, Christian "TAMEARTZ" Rodriguez directly intervened a scale model of the sculpture and bridge with graffiti, the process of which is recreated for the festival through photography and video.

Visit the installation to see the artworks as they loop every evening for the duration of the festival or join us in person for a one-night event to cap off the Design Philadelphia festival on October 21st from 6:30pm- 9:30pm in the alley to celebrate the artists and this groundbreaking collaboration.

Sound and video for the project is made possible with support from 10th Floor Productions, Drew Billiau and DJ Juanderful. Additional project support for this event is provided by Home2 Suites and the Parkway corporation
