ESTABLISHING A NEW CENTENNIAL:
DESIGNS FOR ADVANCING EQUALITY
2020 marks the anniversary of women winning the right to vote in public elections in the United States. Including women in the democratic process was a significant step towards fairness, however realizing true equality for all has yet to come.
Through the design process, designers focus on the end-users to solve problems and improve experiences. By addressing different perspectives, design can move us towards a more equitable society. DesignPhiladelphia is seeking projects, realized or unrealized, that have helped advance equality through the experience of its user. Projects to be considered look to establish a new equitable future.
This call is open to all designers. Selected projects from the open call will be exhibited alongside highlights of renowned designers, from both the Philadelphia region and globally, who have historically pushed passed boundaries of limitation.
DesignPhiladelphia will host, alongside guest curator, Christine Tan (designer and co-owner of Fork Spoon), select projects that speak to creating equality. This exhibition has been made possible by a grant received by the National Endowment for the Arts. Additionally, DesignPhiladelphia will be working with the region’s community to provide opportunities to young women interested in design through this exhibition.
All submissions need to be submitted by July 29, 2020. (DEADLINE EXTENDED)
- Show us your project, realized or unrealized, that you, or a group of you, have completed that addresses the issue of equality.
- Tell us what issue of equality the project addresses, and how it creates a more even footing for its user.
BEST IN EMERGING DESIGN:
OPEN CALL FOR INTERIOR ARCHITECTURE AND DESIGN
DesignPhiladelphia is excited to announce the third and special edition of our Best in Design Competition – this year we are focusing on emerging designers, hence the slight name change this year – Best in Emerging Design. We also decided to narrow our design challenge to a specific discipline for this year: interior architecture and design. We plan to switch up the disciplines every year and perhaps even grow to a multiple category competition – but for this year – we are focusing on a virtual competition that asks our emerging designers to reimagine the interior of the Center for Architecture and Design, 1218 Arch Street, Philadelphia, PA 19107.
A Google Sketchup 3D model of the Center for Architecture and Design will be provided as the platform for all to use to get creative and reimagine the Center. The Center IS NOT planning a remodel or renovation, so these designs are simply to show off your creativity and design excellence.
The Best in Emerging Design competition is looking to propel Philadelphia’s best emerging design businesses/designers forward by providing robust local and international exposure. Finalists will showcase work at DesignPhiladelphia 2020. The winning design solution will be awarded with a cash prize of $5,000. All finalists will be featured during the DesignPhiladelphia Festival.
