Ellen Lupton, Cooper Hewitt's senior curator of contemporary design, will talk about how designers, architects, engineers, health care workers and neighbors come together in times of crisis. She will share stories and ideas from Cooper Hewitt's upcoming exhibition on design and epidemics, and discuss how hacking, open-source design, service design, activism and mutual aid have been sources of good in times of hardship.

Her presentation will be followed by a Q&A session led by Jefferson's School of Design, Engineering & Commerce and their College of Population Health.

Ellen Lupton is Senior Curator of Contemporary Design at Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum in New York. Recent exhibitions include “Herbert Bayer: Bauhaus Master,” “Face Values: Understanding Artificial Intelligence,” and “The Senses: Design Beyond Vision.” Her exhibition, “Design and Healing: Creative Responses to Epidemics,” will be open from December 2022–August 2021 at Cooper Hewitt. She teaches at MICA in Baltimore and is an AIGA Gold Medalist and a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences.
