Description: The Design Center at Philadelphia University (TDC) presents "Lace in Translation", a new exhibition of contemporary work that explores the intersection of luxurious hand-craftsmanship with modern, mass production. TDC's historic Quaker Lace Company collection is the inspiration for three internationally-renowned artists and designers reconsidering conventional notions of lace. European designers Tord Boontje and Demakersvan, and Canadian artist Cal Lane have created installations specifically for TDC's unique and intimate space- a 1950s era, Hollywood-style ranch house.

From the intricacy of a handwoven raffia curtain, to the industrial art forms of laser-cut fabrics, a welded filigree oil tank, and a lace chain-link fence, "Lace in Translation" plays with the concept of lace, utilizing unexpected materials and new technologies to transform the Center's grounds and galleries. Exhibition runs September 24, 2009 - April 3, 2010.

Description: Philadelphia's affordability, diverse neighborhoods and "under the radar" personality have fueled a robust and growing culture of design over the past decade. All of the liabilities that historically provided the City with negative attention - crime, trash, and lack of economic growth - have provided a context within which a diverse creative community has emerged on its own terms. This "work in progress" mentality proved to be a tremendous advantage for architects during the recent real estate boom as Philadelphia quickly established itself as a lifestyle destination on the back of new luxury housing, urban mixed-use development, and a strong interest in greening. The city appears to be going through a new evolution in its design identity and architecture is clearly playing a key role in the process.

There are clear trends in common among the offices represented in the exhibition. Many of the firms have strong connections among the four schools of architecture in Philadelphia. These links promote a true sense of praxis where client-based construction and academic pursuits cross fertilize.

This exhibition looks to reveal the critical mass of innovative design practices that have grown out of this robust context. Some of the offices have already gained national recognition while others are start-ups that are just beginning to make their marks. The common thread running through the work is a sense of experimentation and enthusiasm for the future. The hope is that by bringing this collection of work together that new and interesting ideas, dialogues, and relationships will follow.

This exhibition opens Thursday, October 8th at noon and will run until Sunday, October 25th.

Join us for the Opening Reception on Tuesday, October 13th at 6:00pm

  • Ben's House: Designing History at Franklin Court
  • Penn Design
  • Category: Exhibition
  • Date: Ongoing
  • Time: call for hours
  • Location: University of Pennsylvania
    Kroiz Gallery / Architectural Archives
    220 South 34th Street
  •

Description: In the early 1970s, as America was preparing for its bicentennial, an extraordinary solution to an age old problem was rising in a back alley of old city Philadelphia. Benjamin Franklin's life and legacy would be a central story in those celebrations, yet his life-long home on Orianna Street, an obvious site for a museum, was lost in the nineteenth century leaving no visual record of its appearance. The resulting solution, an imaginative reconstruction consisting of a "ghost" structure representing the original house, a garden, an above ground archaeological display and underground museum spaces, was the work of a design team including world-renowned architects, Robert Venturi and Denise Scott Brown. Franklin Court, as it became known, challenged the prevailing norms for the interpretation of archaeological and historic sites, especially sites that no longer existed. This exhibition, curated by Frank Matero and William Whittaker, School of Design, University of Pennsylvania, explores the making of Franklin Court through a selection of original sketches, models and period photographs, to understand the context of its creation and its enduring legacy.
